The Suffragette movement came from Manchester—the Women’s Social and Political Union. Arthur Wynne, born in Liverpool, invented the crossword in December 1913. On 13 August 1964, Britain carried out its last two executions at Strangeways and Walton Prison. Under the Museums Act 1845, the UK’s second and third public municipal libraries were at Warrington in 1848 and at Salford Museum and Art Gallery in 1850; Canterbury had been first in 1847. The first Trades Union Congress was held in 1868 at the Mechanics’ Institute, Manchester. The World Pie Eating Championship is held in Wigan each year.
Ann Lee from Manchester started the USA Shakers movement, founded out of the Quakers, which itself has strong links to Pendle Hill in Lancashire. Joseph Livesey of Preston was the founder of Britain’s temperance movement, and the word teetotal was first coined in Preston in 1833. The crumbly Cheshire cheese is thought to be the oldest in Britain. Heaton Park in north Manchester is the largest municipal park in Europe. Jelly Babies were invented in Lancaster in 1864, at Fryers of Lancashire. The first KFC outlet in the UK was on Fishergate in Preston in May 1965, opened by the entrepreneur Ray Allen. Oldham claims to be the site of the first fried potatoes in the UK in 1860. The UK’s biggest dance music festival takes place on the August Bank Holiday at Creamfields on Daresbury Estate. Ingvar Kamprad’s IKEA opened its first UK store in Warrington on 1 October 1987; the UK was the 20th country at the time that IKEA had been established. The International Cheese Awards are held at the end of July in Nantwich.
Liverpool and Manchester, the two largest cities in the North West by population, are known for being the birthplace of beat music (also called “Merseybeat”) during the 1960s to 1970s, and the development of the Madchester music scene from the 1980s, and 1990s respectively.
A Taste of Honey was an influential 1960s film set in Salford, depicting working class poverty in ways not previously seen at the cinema, known as kitchen sink realism; Walter Greenwood’s Love on the Dole, a 1930s book also set in Salford, was thought by the BBFC to be too sordid a depiction of poverty to be made into a film; Mike Leigh, from Salford, has produced films on a similar subject.Show More

History of Manchester – 1. Mamucium

The first in a series about the history of one of the world’s most historically important cities. I’ll be looking into the very origins of Manchester – from an insignificant …nowhere in an obscure corner of Europe to a valuable hub for the Roman expansion across the British Isles.

I’ll visit the remains of the old Roman fort in Castlefield – Mamucium – including the only remaining piece of the original fort left standing, which until recently was inaccessible and forgotten about.

Finally, I’ll be heading to the Castleshaw valley above Saddleworth to find a tiny outpost the Romans built there.

In this video we visit Manchester’s Grandest building the Refuge Assurance building. It has a secret and hidden history. Now a Hotel it was built for the Refuge Assurance company …in 1891 designed by the Architect Alfred Waterhouse. This really is a grand and Baroque building full of hidden secrets and history. We learn about the ghost that haunts the building and see all the original features of this art deco building. The stunning architecture is breathtaking during this tour of Manchester’ Principle hotel it was also called the Palace hotel. Behind the hotel we can see the river Medlock on this guided Manchester tour. The River Medlock of course where I have waded and done lots of Urban exploring urbex.

Five historical Gems around Manchester & Salford

In this video we continue our search for interesting historical gems around Manchester and Salford. Firstly we visit Poynton in Stockport to look at a 17th century Ice house. This …historical grade II listed building belonged to Poynton Hall. Secondly and for the disused railway enthusiasts we look at some old railway lines and points around the Radcliffe area of Manchester. An old railway sign can also be seen and the old tracks are now being consumed by the trees. Thirdly we look at the Nasmyth steam hammer invented by James Nasmyth in Patricroft Eccles in Salford. The steam hammer was Victorian engineering masterpiece. Fourth we look at James Brindleys Stone aqueduct that carried the Bridgewater canal over the River Irwell at Barton. The Barton aqueduct was demolished when the Manchester ship canal was built and replaced by a swing bridge. Finally we visit Liverpool road station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway. We look around the arrivals area that dealt with railway goods. We see the original cattle ramp that is now grade II listed. This video is definitely one for the railway and engineering enthusiasts as it looks at Railway architecture and Victorian engineering as well as James Brindley canal engineering.Show More

In the second part in the Manchester series we’re going to be looking at Medieval Manchester (Mameceaster) and the wilderness years between the Romans and the Industrial Revolution.

I trace …the route of one of the city’s most intriguing mysteries – the famous Nico Ditch – once a boundary line between the Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia, and also possibly even a defensive earthwork.

Then I head into the city’s Medieval Quarter to look at the Cathedral, Chetham’s Library and the equally mysterious Hanging Ditch. Who knew that the history of such a place could be found by looking in ditches?

A day in the life of a British grammar school in the 1960s, filmed at Urmston Grammar School for Boys (Manchester UK) in 1965.
Although it looks very naive now, this …film gives a portrait of what school life was like in the 1960s …caps, short trousers, satchels, conkers, teachers in gowns… …and no sign of safety spectacles in Science lessons.

The film was made principally for 2 reasons:
–to show prospective parents and pupils what school life was like,
and

The idea came after Omo (a popular washing powder in the 60s) started …to give away plastic daffodils.

‘The Green Cloud’ is a 16mm film made in 1964 by staff & pupils at Urmston Grammar School for Boys (Manchester, UK) on a low budget (of just £23) …using …a rented Bolex 16mm camera with just 16 minutes of film, edited down to 12 minutes.
It was voted one of the Top Ten amateur films of 1964 in an international competition, with the presentation of an ‘oscar’ at the BFI Southbank Theatre, London.
It’s a sci-fi horror film, but the horror only becomes apparent in the last 10 seconds of the film.Show More
